Enter Your Dog in a Dog Show

Participating in a dog show is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both the dog and the handler. Most dogs thrive in the spotlight, strutting about and having fun while in the competition circle. Competing in dog shows is also a bonding experience for the handler and pet, as much time is spent on training. In order to take part in this experience, there are a few things you, as a potential dog show handler, should

  1. Ensure that you are registered with the Kennel Club (KC). If you would like your dog to compete in an KC show, it must be purebred and already registered with the club.
  2. Check with your local newspaper, pet store, radio, television station for advertised dog show competitions or most countries have weekly (or monthly) dog newspapers that list all upcoming shows & give news & results. The two in this country are called 'Our Dogs' & 'Dog World'. It is possible to find out the time in which your dog's breed will be judged; however, it is helpful to attend the entire show to learn about the different aspects of dog shows and to see how other handlers show their dogs.
  3. Train your dog to compete in shows. The Kennel Club don't run classes themselves, although they do sanction some ringcraft classes. They can give you the address of any sanctioned ringcraft classes in your area.
